Desert Wing

Project Profile: Scottsdale Ultra Low Gloss Carbon Residence

Set into the Sonoran Desert landscape of Scottsdale, Arizona, this modern estate was designed to feel both sculptural and effortless, with clean horizontal masses, expansive glazing, and a dramatic standing seam roof that instantly becomes the home’s signature architectural gesture. With intense sun, wide-open sightlines, and a roof plane that’s constantly in view, the finish selection had to deliver bold beauty, not shine.

To achieve that refined, non-reflective look, the project team selected CMG Ultra Low Gloss Carbon for the standing seam roof. With ultra-low reflectance and a deep architectural beauty, Carbon brings a rich, matte presence that reads intentional and premium from every angle without unwanted glare.

A Roof That Defines the Architecture

This home’s roof isn’t just protection; it’s the focal point. The bold, angular geometry creates a cantilevered “wing” effect that frames entry and outdoor living spaces while emphasizing the home’s modern, monolithic forms. Because the roof is so prominent, the finish needed to stay visually calm in harsh desert light, allowing the architecture—not reflectivity—to command attention.

Ultra Low Gloss Carbon delivers that restraint. The finish absorbs light rather than bouncing it, giving the roof a smooth, velvety appearance that feels high-end and intentional from the street, the courtyard, and aerial viewpoints.

Ultra Low Gloss Performance Where It Matters Most

Large, high-visibility standing seam roof planes demand more than just color; they demand control. In modern architecture, glare and distortion can distract from otherwise crisp design lines. CMG’s Ultra Low Gloss series is engineered specifically for that reality: reduced light reflectance for a clean, minimal look, and a finish aesthetic that helps minimize oil canning so the roof reads smoother and more uniform in real-world lighting.

For this Scottsdale residence—where sun angles change dramatically throughout the day—those attributes translate into a roof that looks composed in the morning, confident at midday, and striking at sunset.

Collaboration-Driven Design, Guided by Expertise

CW Architecture brought the homeowner’s vision to life through a deep understanding of cutting-edge building materials and a design philosophy rooted in modern desert living. With CMG’s guidance on finish selection and performance characteristics, the team was able to specify a roofing solution that matched the home’s elevated design goals, delivering a bold architectural statement without the drawbacks often associated with darker roof colors in high-sun environments.

The Result

A breathtaking modern residence where the roof’s dramatic geometry is matched by a finish that stays refined, consistent, and understated—Ultra Low Gloss Carbon anchoring the entire composition with a truly architectural matte presence.
